Do you remember this story? Laszlo Hanyecz exchanged 10,000 bitcoins for two pizzas, and it’s probably the most famous transaction in cryptocurrency history. Back then, it made sense; now, it looks like one of the biggest "oops" moments of all time.
So what happened? In May 2010, Laszlo decided he wanted pizza. He just wanted pizza. He posted on the Bitcoin forum that he would give 10,000 BTC for two pizzas with toppings — sausage, onions, green peppers. Pineapple was not an option. Bitcoin was completely new at the time, nobody knew what it was, so most people ignored the post.
But someone responded. 19-year-old Jeremy Sturdivant thought: why not? He ordered pizza with a credit card and received 10,000 bitcoins. At that time, it was worth about $30, so it was a fair deal for both sides. Laszlo even took a photo of his pizzas and posted it online, saying it was the first real Bitcoin transaction.
And here the drama begins. Those pizzas, which cost almost nothing back then, would now be worth nearly a billion dollars. With Bitcoin’s current price at around $67,490, the total is about $675 million. Laszlo Hanyecz sometimes appears in interviews and says he has zero regrets. Why? He mined those bitcoins himself, so for him, they were practically free.
Interestingly, Jeremy, the teenager, also doesn’t regret it. Right after the transaction, he converted those bitcoins into $400 and went traveling. Now, that’s worth about $119, and he’s completely satisfied. He says it was an adventure, and perhaps his role in the early days of Bitcoin is worth more to him than money.
The whole story has become a meme in the crypto world. We celebrate Bitcoin Pizza Day every year on May 22. It’s not just a story about a transaction — it’s a reminder of how quickly value and perspective can change. Laszlo Hanyecz just wanted pizza, and he created one of the most well-known anecdotes in the history of digital currencies. Sometimes, the best stories are the ones that seemed completely ordinary at the time.
