I just realized that many people are confused about how to tell real gold from fake gold. My friend also once bought a fake, so I want to share this experience.
It's actually easy if you know the tricks. First, always check the stamp or hallmark on the gold. If it says 14K, 18K, or 22K, that's a good sign. Those numbers indicate the purity level of the gold. For example, 18K means 75% pure gold, with the rest being other metals. This is the most popular because it balances shine and durability.
There’s also a simple method you can try at home. Take a magnet and bring it close to the gold. If it’s attracted, it’s probably fake, because real gold is non-magnetic. I often use this method when I’m unsure.
Another fairly accurate way is to rub the gold on unglazed ceramic. Real gold will leave a gold-colored streak, while fake gold usually leaves a black or unclear mark. There’s also a vinegar or acid test, but it’s a bit risky if you don’t know how to do it properly.
For a more precise way to distinguish real gold, pay attention to the weight and density. Gold is a dense material, much heavier than it looks. If it feels light, something might be off.
Honestly, if you want the most accurate result, it’s best to consult a professional jeweler or an authorized jewelry store. They have certified testing tools that can’t be wrong. But at least with the tips above, you can filter out the most obvious fakes.
The important thing is, the higher the karat, the purer and shinier the gold, but also softer. Conversely, lower karat gold is more durable but less pure. So choose according to your needs. Gold isn’t just jewelry; it’s also an investment and confidence. Don’t get fooled!
