I just realized that many people in the crypto community often talk about hopium without really understanding what it is. In fact, hopium is a slang term combining two words: hope and opium. This expression was created to mock those who have overly optimistic, unfounded hopes about their investments.
So, what exactly is hopium in the crypto world? It describes investors who are blind to reality, still believing that dead coins will moon. I've seen many cases like this, especially during sharp market declines. People just want to cling to positive thoughts instead of facing uncomfortable truths.
An interesting point is how hopium differs from copium. Both words relate to investor psychology, but they are used in different contexts. Copium refers to self-soothing mechanisms to cope with negative situations—like justifying losses. Hopium, on the other hand, is baseless hope, a belief without supporting evidence.
I often hear people use hopium in situations like: a little hopium for degenerates, or hope for all of us, or the classic phrase about Bitcoin reaching 100k. These expressions are all sarcastic, mocking vague hopes. The term hopium inherently carries a negative connotation because it’s used to ridicule unrealistic expectations, but within the community, it has become a humorous way of self-deprecating, a kind of coping mechanism to reduce psychological pressure when witnessing reckless investment decisions.
