(MENAFN) Sustained interaction between the world’s two “greatest nuclear superpowers” remains essential, US Representative Anna Paulina Luna has stated following discussions with a delegation of Russian lawmakers. She also noted her intention to “foster… dialogue and push for peace” in ties with Moscow.

The meeting occurred on Thursday after Luna invited a group of Russian parliamentarians led by Vyacheslav Nikonov, a senior member of the International Affairs Committee. The delegation engaged with a bipartisan group of US legislators at the Donald Trump Institute of Peace in Washington.

“As representatives of the world’s two greatest nuclear super powers, we owe our citizens open dialogue, ideas, and open lines of communication,” Luna said in a post on X after the talks, adding that discussions centered on “peace and bilateral relations.”

According to the Russian delegation’s leader, the discussions went “better than expected,” and he suggested that reestablishing legislative engagement between the two countries is now “possible.” Another participant, State Duma vice speaker Boris Chernyshov, described the exchange as “an open and honest dialogue.” He added that “a large number of issues” were addressed, calling the outcome “good.”

Officials in Moscow also responded positively, describing the meeting as a “necessary” and “very important” development. As stated by reports, there is optimism that the visit could help restore a significant communication channel that has been “totally frozen” in recent years. It was also noted that renewing such engagement would be “in the interests of both Moscow and Washington.”

Direct parliamentary interaction between the two countries had largely ceased following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, when the United States imposed sanctions on most members of Russia’s lower and upper legislative chambers, effectively halting formal exchanges and official visits.

According to reports, efforts to reestablish communication resumed after Donald Trump returned to the US presidency in early 2025. Despite this, Thursday’s meeting marked the first in-person engagement between Russian and American lawmakers since relations deteriorated.
