Interesting that Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, is so outspoken about cryptocurrencies. The Finnish-American developer didn't hold back in a forum post and called the digital asset class a "great way for scams." He compares it to classic Ponzi schemes — the next fool just pays the price. Not exactly the friendliest characterization, but honestly, not surprising coming from someone who has been working in tech for decades.
What amused me is how he humorously groups the belief in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy into the same category. That shows how he perceives these things.
Now it gets interesting: There was this crazy rumor that Torvalds himself might be Satoshi Nakamoto, the Bitcoin creator. It was fueled by an incident in January 2022 when a kernel log suddenly appeared with "Name = I am Satoshi." Torvalds clarified later — it was just a prank by a jokester who manipulated GitHub. He calls these speculations "empty chatter" and also dismisses rumors about his personal wealth. The idea that Linus Torvalds' assets could be tied up in Bitcoin is apparently a joke to him.
But it gets even better: In the same post, Torvalds also dismisses technological singularity, calling it a "bedtime story for children." Similar to the Hungry Caterpillar — perfect as clickbait, but not much more. He admits it’s a fascinating science fiction concept, but reality looks different. Continuous exponential growth? Nonsense, he says. The boundaries are closing in. A guy who really has no illusions.
