Recently, I needed to register some overseas accounts. Using a new SIM card isn't cost-effective, so I researched virtual number platforms. Basically, they provide virtual numbers to receive SMS verification codes, preventing the exposure of your real phone number. I’ve encountered many pitfalls before, but I found a few reliable tools, so I want to share them today.
SMS-Activate and 5SIM are the most stable overall. Verification codes usually arrive within about 10 seconds, and they support many countries, making them especially suitable for testing foreign applications. Super Cloud SMS supports both US and Chinese number ranges; US numbers typically receive codes in 10-30 seconds, while domestic numbers are faster, arriving in 5-20 seconds, though sometimes slow during peak times. Xiaoniao Number receives codes in 5-15 seconds mainly for domestic apps, such as common e-commerce and social platforms, offering good value. Getsmscode is the cheapest, suitable for light users, but may have delays on less popular platforms.
When using virtual numbers, there are a few pitfalls to avoid: shared numbers are easily used by others, and risk control number ranges may not receive verification codes; it’s recommended to prepare multiple numbers so you can switch immediately if one becomes invalid; some platforms support a one-click number switch feature, which is very practical. If you're just testing APIs, any service that supports API access is enough; but if you need stable registration on a specific website, it’s best to load multiple numbers at once.
Also, don’t use virtual numbers as your primary number long-term, as privacy and security cannot be guaranteed. When choosing a platform, avoid cheap, unreliable options—only reputable and active providers are trustworthy. Overall, virtual number platforms are mainly for testing convenience and privacy protection. Using them correctly can save you a lot of trouble.
