White House Budget Proposal: Cuts to Domestic Spending, Major Boost for Defense
On April 3rd, according to a White House fact sheet distributed ahead of its annual budget release, President Trump will propose a discretionary budget plan on Friday that calls for a significant increase in defense spending while reiterating his push for substantial cuts to domestic programs. The budget request allocates $1.5 trillion for defense, a substantial increase from the $1 trillion proposed for fiscal year 2026. The new figures include a $1.1 trillion base budget authorization for the Department of Defense, along with an additional $350 billion for U.S. involvement in the war against Iran. Non-defense spending is slated for a 10% reduction, amounting to approximately $73 billion. Trump’s pursuit of a significantly higher defense budget represents the largest annual increase since World War II. Republican lawmakers are not expected to advance many of the cuts outlined in the document, but the increase in defense spending is more likely to garner support. The budget provides important guidance for upcoming funding battles and offers investors a window into how the White House views the nation’s economic outlook. (JIN10)
