Wing is expanding its drone delivery service again with Walmart. Alphabet's Wing announced plans this year to introduce drone delivery to an additional 150 Walmart stores.
So far, this service has been active in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta areas, and now it will also serve cities like Houston, Orlando, Tampa, and Charlotte. The expansion will be phased throughout the year and will continue until 2027. Service in Houston began in mid-January.
According to Heather Rivera, Wing's Chief Business Officer, the most active quarter for customers is the one in which they use the drone delivery service up to three times a week. The most popular items delivered include eggs, meat, tomatoes, avocados, and small snacks.
Once fully expanded, Wing will operate from over 270 Walmart stores. This service, reaching cities like Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami, will cover approximately 10% of the U.S. population.
The partnership between Wing and Walmart started in 2023. Initially, a pilot program was launched at two stores in the Dallas area, reaching about 60,000 households. Later, the service expanded to 18 Walmart Supercenters in Dallas-Fort Worth and locations in Atlanta.
Rivera emphasized the company's commitment to technological development. For example, Wing recently conducted its first commercial flights using a large drone capable of carrying up to five pounds. The strategy is to integrate these services directly into all of Walmart's operations.
Rivera mentioned that in the coming days, they may test various strategies, such as opening multiple stores simultaneously—this approach has been successfully applied with six stores in Atlanta. She added that increasing delivery volume is crucial for their business model. Expanding to more destinations and markets is key to Wing's long-term success.
