I just found out about something pretty futuristic happening in Australia. It turns out they created a spider-shaped robot called Charlotte that literally builds houses in 24 hours. Yes, you read that right: one day.
What surprises me most is that this is not science fiction. Crest Robotics and EarthBuilt Technology developed this machine with the goal of solving real construction problems, but with an even more ambitious scope: they also want to use it to build habitats on the Moon or Mars.
The gray house spider, as some call it, has a 3D printing system that works at impressive speeds. According to the creators, it operates as if you had 100 bricklayers working simultaneously. In 24 hours, it can erect structures of up to 200 square meters without using traditional cement. That’s a game-changer.
What’s interesting is the material it uses. Instead of conventional cement, Charlotte prints layers using a mixture of sand, recycled glass, and crushed bricks. This turns into a compact paste that forms solid walls directly on the ground. Sustainable and efficient.
Jan Golembiewski, co-founder of EarthBuilt, explained to the media that the technology simplifies the entire supply chain into a single, fast process with low environmental impact. They presented the project at the International Astronautical Congress in Sydney, and the reaction was quite positive.
What fascinates me is the potential. First, they solve the housing problem on Earth, then scale to other applications. The gray house spider could be the key to extraterrestrial architecture we need if we want to colonize other planets. It’s the kind of innovation that transforms entire industries.
