Hey, did you also wake up to your phone full of notifications but they were just Valentine’s Day offers? Haha, welcome to the club of singles celebrating with memes. This February 14th was a Saturday, and people didn’t miss the chance to vent with funny images. Some posted Jason Voorhees wishing a happy day after Friday the 13th, others made memes about the lack of romantic messages, surprise breakfasts, or bouquets of flowers. The classics were also present: memes about staying home to sleep, going out drinking alone, or watching all your friends have partners while you’re just there looking. There are even those joking about buying gifts for themselves. And of course, internet users brought out Juan Gabriel and Valentín Elizalde as the patrons of those who weren’t born to love, recalling those songs we all know.

What’s interesting is that behind all this meme and joke culture, there’s a pretty dark story. It turns out this celebration dates back to the 3rd century in Rome, when an emperor named Claudius II decided to ban marriages because he thought single young men made better soldiers. A priest named Valentine disagreed and kept secretly marrying couples until he was caught. On February 14th, in the year 270, he was sentenced to death, and that’s why we celebrate this day. So while you’re seeing memes of frogs and other characters mocking love, remember that it all started with an act of rebellion against a tyrant. Pretty heavy for a day of memes, right?
