I recently discovered something I really didn't expect: the uchuva, that small bright orange fruit wrapped in its natural paper, is much more than just a culinary curiosity. If you're from Colombia or familiar with our Colombian fruits, you've probably seen it before, but what many don't know is all the health benefits this little gem can offer.

The thing is, uchuva, or Physalis peruviana as the academics call it, isn't a seasonal fruit like others. Here in Colombia, it's cultivated year-round, so it's always available, which is a huge advantage. But what's really interesting isn't just its availability, but what's inside.

Recently, I read a study from the Industrial University of Santander that surprised me quite a bit. A mere 85 grams of uchuva provides 35% of the daily recommended vitamin A, which keeps your tissues healthy. Additionally, it contains 25% of vitamin C, which, as we all know, is essential for your immune system to function properly. And that’s not counting the dietary fiber it provides.

What caught my attention the most was discovering that the FAO recognizes this fruit as a key driver of food security precisely because of its nutritional density. It’s no small thing. Researchers in genetics and agronomy have also documented something fascinating: the benefits of uchuva are not fixed but evolve during ripening, increasing its content of essential compounds.

The Latin American Society of Nutrition recommends consuming between 10 and 12 units daily, preferably when they have that well-marked bright orange color. It’s a simple way to harness the potential of this superfruit. If you think about it, among all the fruits from Colombia that we have access to, uchuva is one of those that truly deserves to be included in your daily diet.

The best part is that it works naturally: it neutralizes free radicals and protects your metabolism without complications. It’s the kind of food that makes you feel like you're doing something good for your body. Honestly, since I started consuming it regularly, I’ve noticed the difference.
