Just realized I had to update my SASSA details recently and honestly, the process is different depending on which grant you're getting. If you're on the regular permanent grants like old age or disability, you pretty much have to go in person to a SASSA office—can't do it online. You'll need your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement or letter from the bank), and they'll give you a form to fill out. Takes up to 21 working days to process, so submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to work the next cycle.

But here's the thing—if you're on the SRD grant, it's actually way easier. You can change your SRD phone number online through their portal, which is pretty convenient. Just go to the SASSA SRD website, enter your ID number, and they'll send you a secure link via SMS. You can update your phone number and banking details right there without leaving your house. They send an OTP to verify it's really you, then you're done. The whole thing takes a few days to a week for the bank to verify.

One heads up though—make sure whatever account you're updating is actually in your name. SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that. And if you're doing the cash transfer option, your phone number has to be registered properly. Honestly, the online process for SRD is smooth, but if you run into issues, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 or email them. Some people swear by just going to the office in person if things get complicated.
