Corruption and bribery exceeding 100 million yuan: Former State Grid Chairman Kou Wei sentenced to death with a reprieve
[Caixin.com] More than a year ago, Kou Wei, the former general manager of Datang Group who was detained for graft, and the former chairman of the State Grid, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve.
On April 1, 2026, the Intermediate People’s Court of Xing’an League in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region publicly handed down a first-instance verdict on the case in which Kou Wei was convicted of accepting bribes, embezzlement, and the crime of dereliction of duty involving abuse of authority by personnel of a state-owned company.
The Intermediate People’s Court of Xing’an League sentenced Kou Wei to death for bribery, with a two-year reprieve for execution, stripped him of political rights for life, and ordered the confiscation of all his personal property.
After trial, it was found that between 1996 and 2024, Kou Wei, using his conveniences of office, provided assistance to relevant units and individuals in matters such as project contracting, business operations, and job promotions. He directly or through others illegally received money and valuables totaling more than RMB 154 million. During this period, he successively served as Party Secretary and then Director/Factory Manager of the Mangwan Power Plant in Yunnan Province; a member of the Party Leadership Group and then Deputy Director of the Yunnan Electric Power Industry Bureau; a member of the Party Leadership Group and then Deputy General Manager of Yunnan Power Group Co., Ltd.; Party Secretary and then General Manager and Chairman of Yunnan Lancang River Hydropower Development Co., Ltd.; a member of the Party Leadership Group and then Deputy General Manager of China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd.; Deputy Secretary of the Party Leadership Group, then General Manager, then Party Secretary, and then Chairman of State Grid Co., Ltd.; Deputy Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and then General Manager of China Datang Group Co., Ltd., among other positions.
