just noticed Google rolled out something pretty cool for Nigerian users - you can now search in Yoruba and Hausa directly in Google Search with AI summaries. honestly didn't expect this to happen so soon.

so basically if you're more comfortable speaking or typing in your native language, you can just ask questions in Yoruba and get AI-generated answers back in the same language. same thing works in Hausa. they're saying this is part of a bigger push to support 13 African languages total on their AI search now.

what's wild is that Hausa and Yoruba speakers make up almost half of Nigeria's population combined, but most digital tools still default to English. reducing that friction makes sense - not everyone wants to translate their thoughts to search online. the fact that you can even narrate your question in Yoruba in the Google App and get results back in Yoruba is genuinely useful.

this ties into their WAXAL project they launched recently, which is basically an open-source speech database for African languages. feels like Google is actually trying to make their AI tools work for people outside the English-speaking bubble. whether it sticks or not, at least they're making the effort in Yoruba and other languages across the continent.
