What we can see from the F1 pre-season test data is quite fascinating. Over the two-week testing period in Bahrain in February, the performance of each team under the new regulations has started to become somewhat clear.

First, what caught my attention was Mercedes' recovery. They were known to struggle during spring testing in previous years, but this year is different. キミ・アントネッリ and ジョージ・ラッセル recorded 1:33s times in the first week, then improved to the 1:32s in the second week. トト・ウォルフ also commented that "we feel confident at the start of testing," which suggests they are maintaining a strong position among the frontrunners.

Another standout was Ferrari. シャルル・ルクレール's lap time of 1:31.992 was dominant throughout testing. However, looking at straight-line speed alone, Ferrari doesn't seem to significantly outperform other teams. A detailed analysis of speed traces indicates that Ferrari's advantage appears to be in cornering efficiency. ルクレール doesn't fully lift off the throttle in corners, whereas other drivers tend to do so. This could be a key difference.

マクラーレンのランド・ノリス recorded a top speed of 322 km/h in the speed trap. While they show competitiveness in top speed, overall pace distribution suggests Ferrari is slightly ahead.

Looking at the lower grid positions reveals various stories. キャデラック, as a newer team, managed to gather a lot of data with セルジオ・ペレス and バルテリ・ボッタス completing many laps. グレアム・ロードン also expressed satisfaction with their progress. On the other hand, アストンマーチン's expectations versus reality are quite different. Expectations were high with エイドリアン・ニューイ's appointment, but during testing, they faced struggles including battery-related issues.

It's important to note that the results of the F1 pre-season tests do not necessarily predict season success. フレッド・ヴァスール also pointed out that during testing, teams run different fuel loads, engine modes, and tire settings. Some teams may not even be using their full setup.

In fact, looking back at the 2025 season, the results from pre-season testing did not always align with final standings. アルピーヌ posted top 4 lap times during testing but finished near the bottom at the end of the season. Conversely, ウィリアムズ struggled during testing but improved throughout the year to finish 5th.

Midway through the second week, all teams showed improvement in lap times. This reflects the data collection and adjustments made during the testing period. The top four teams are already running speeds close to the mid-race lap times of the 2025 Bahrain Grand Prix, indicating they will likely be main contenders this season. ウィリアムズ, while starting slow, still has plenty of room to evolve throughout the season.

What we learn from F1 pre-season testing is that it’s an indicator of development potential, not an immediate predictor of season success. The thousands of laps and millions of telemetry data points may have reignited fans' excitement for the new season. The real competition begins when the lights go out in Melbourne.
