95-year-old Buffett's First In-Depth Interview After Stepping Down: Talking Apple, Nukes, Gates—Every Word Is Valuable Insights
Just finished Buffett's first in-depth interview after stepping down as CEO. The old man is 95 years old and in incredible shape. He didn’t talk about the past at all, only looked forward. Here are a few points that left a deep impression on me:
1. Retirement? Not happening.
He still goes to the office every day, makes calls with subordinates before the market opens to discuss trades, and secretly bought a little stock (he didn’t say what). Officially handed over the reins, but he’s sitting just six meters away from the successor.
2. Sold Apple too early, but not buying now.
He admits he “sold too early,” but he bought even earlier, and just Apple stock earned him over $100 billion. Want him to add to his position now? No way, unless Apple drops to “that price.”
3. The decline in US stocks isn’t a big deal.
He said since taking over Berkshire Hathaway, the stock price has halved three times. Now, a 9% drop in the Nasdaq is nothing. He’s telling you not to panic, but also not to expect him to buy the dip.
4. The Federal Reserve should set inflation target at 0.
He thinks the 2% inflation target is basically telling everyone “saving money is less worthwhile than spending.” Ordinary people earn 2% interest but pay taxes, so their purchasing power actually declines. He’s more worried about the dollar’s status and the banking system.
5. Charity lunch is reopening, with Curry as partner.
Because the founder of the Glide Foundation passed away, he changed his mind. This time, he’s teaming up with NBA star Curry and his wife. The auction starts May 7, with a starting bid of $50,000.
6. He hasn’t spoken to Bill Gates since.
Since the Epstein documents were exposed, he hasn’t contacted Gates. His words: “I don’t want to know too much, don’t want to be called as a witness.” Don’t forget, he donated $43 billion to Gates Foundation.
7. Nuclear weapons will be used sooner or later.
He said there are now nine nuclear-armed countries. The most feared situation is when the person holding the nuclear button is dying or facing great shame—that kind of situation no one can predict. As for Iran, his judgment is: if Iran gets a nuclear bomb, things will be more complicated than when they don’t have one.
