Putin: Russia May Cut Off Gas to Europe Ahead of Schedule
Russian President Putin stated to the media on the 4th that, given the EU’s intention to completely cease purchasing Russian natural gas, Russia may decide to halt gas supplies to Europe ahead of schedule. Putin said that, considering the EU’s plan to impose restrictions on Russian natural gas imports until a complete ban is implemented, Russia could consider stopping gas supplies to Europe now, which might be more advantageous for Russia. He emphasized that this is not a final decision; he will instruct the government to study the issue. Putin said that the recent surge in European energy prices was not caused by supply restrictions, as the main supplier countries have not reduced their supply volumes. He believes the reason lies in the EU authorities’ erroneous policies over the years, as well as the overall impact of the Middle East situation and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on the global market. On January 26, the 27 EU member states officially adopted regulations on gradually banning imports of pipeline natural gas and liquefied natural gas from Russia. A comprehensive ban on liquefied natural gas imports from Russia will take effect at the beginning of 2027, and a comprehensive ban on pipeline natural gas imports will be implemented in the fall of 2027. In 2025, Russian natural gas accounted for about 13% of the EU’s total imports, worth over 15 billion euros. (Xinhua News Agency)
