Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA details, especially when it comes to changing banking information. Spent some time figuring this out recently and thought I'd share what I learned.

So here's the thing – if you're getting a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you can't just do everything online. You actually have to go to your nearest SASSA office in person. They'll give you a form to fill out and you need to bring your valid ID plus proof of your new bank account – usually a recent bank statement or an official letter from your bank. The key thing is that the account has to be in your name only, no joint accounts or anything like that.

Once you submit it, they send the details to your bank and it can take up to 21 days to process. If you want the change to happen in the next payment cycle, you need to do this before the 15th of the month. Miss that deadline and you're waiting another month.

Now, if you're on the SRD R370 grant, that's different – you can actually change your banking details online, which is way easier. You go to the official SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they send you a secure link via SMS. Click it, enter your new bank details, and you're done. Same rule applies though – account must be in your name.

For updating your phone number, permanent grant holders should visit the SASSA office or call their helpline at 0800 60 10 11. SRD beneficiaries can do it online through the contact portal – you'll get an OTP sent to your new number to verify. Fair warning though: there are fake websites out there trying to scam people, so always use the official SASSA links.

The whole process is pretty straightforward once you know what you're doing. Just make sure you have all your documents ready before you go, especially if you need to update your banking details in person. Don't want to waste a trip to the SASSA office.
