Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly change their SASSA banking details, especially with December payments coming up. Got asked about this so many times, figured I'd share what actually works.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you can't just do it online like some people think. You gotta go in person to your nearest SASSA office. Yeah, I know it's a hassle, but that's how it works. You'll need to fill out the Payment Method Change Form and bring your original ID plus a copy. For the new bank account, they want official proof—either a bank statement from the last three months or a letter from your bank. Important thing: the account has to be in YOUR name only, no joint accounts or anything like that.
The whole verification thing takes up to 21 working days once they send it to the bank. So if you want the new details to take effect next month, you gotta submit before the 15th of this month. Miss that deadline and you're waiting another cycle.
Now, if you're getting the SRD R370 grant, that's a different story—way easier actually. Everything's online through the SASSA SRD portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you just update your bank details through that. Same rule applies though: account must be in your name. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for the bank to verify.
For changing your cellphone number on SRD, use the contact portal on the SASSA website. Enter your ID and application ID, put in your new number, pick a reason for the change, and they'll send you an OTP to verify. Sounds simple but watch out for fake websites trying to scam people with this stuff—always use the official SASSA link.
If you're stuck with any of this, call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or just go to your local office. Sometimes the online stuff doesn't work smoothly, especially when you're trying to change banking details, so having backup options is good to know.
