NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has issued a stern warning regarding the most blatant tanking behaviors seen in recent years. His remarks during last weekend’s All-Star Weekend press conference demonstrate a strong stance against the widespread intentional losing within the league.
Just last week, the Utah Jazz were fined $500,000 for restricting the playing time of their star players, and the Indiana Pacers were fined $100,000 for sitting multiple starters in a game. This has resulted in an unprecedented situation where $600,000 in fines have been levied in just one week.
Silver openly stated, “We are witnessing conduct worse than I can remember in recent years. This has led to these fines and my statement that we will be closely monitoring all situations involving team conduct this season.” His concern is primarily about the integrity of the game itself. While it’s understandable that teams might want to lose intentionally to secure better draft picks, their blatant methods are considered distasteful.
Silver’s proposed measures are twofold. First, direct warnings and fines to teams. But as a next step, he is also considering a review of the draft lottery system itself. “The Competition Committee began re-evaluating the entire approach to the draft lottery earlier this year,” Silver revealed. Additionally, he hinted at the possibility of additional penalties, such as confiscating draft picks.
This is a serious response. It indicates that Silver has determined that fines alone are insufficient. There was also mention of NBA expansion plans, with Las Vegas and Seattle being considered as candidates, though details will be discussed at the Board of Governors meeting in March.
He also addressed the WNBA labor dispute, expressing hope that an agreement can be reached within the next two months. With training camp just two months away, there is pressure to resolve negotiations quickly. Silver is deeply involved behind the scenes and is encouraged by the increased direct engagement from both players and owners.
Whether it’s the tanking issue, expansion plans, or WNBA labor negotiations, the NBA faces several major challenges. However, Silver’s firm stance suggests a genuine commitment to addressing these issues. His warning about tanking, in particular, sends a strong message to the entire league.
