Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA details, especially with the December payments coming up. So here's what I figured out after dealing with this myself.
If you're on a permanent grant like old age or disability, you can't just do it online. You actually have to go to your nearest SASSA office in person. Bring your original SA ID and a recent bank statement (stamped, less than 3 months old) or a letter from your bank. They'll give you a form to fill out and send it to the bank for verification. This takes up to 21 working days, so if you need it sorted for next month's payment, submit before the 15th of the current month. Also important: the account has to be in your name only. No joint accounts or anything.
Now if you're on the SRD R370 grant, that's actually way easier. You can update your banking details online through the official SASSA SRD portal. They'll send you an SMS link to verify everything, and the whole thing is secure. Just make sure your new bank account is registered in your name exactly as it appears on your ID. Same rule applies.
For updating your cellphone number, permanent grant holders should call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office. But SRD grant people can do it through the contact portal on the website. You'll need your SA ID and Application ID, and they'll send an OTP to your new number to confirm.
One thing to watch out for: there are fake SASSA websites floating around trying to scam people. Always use the official portal, not some random link. If you're unsure, just go to the office or call the helpline. It might take longer but it's definitely safer than risking your details.
