Just realized a lot of people don't know how to change your bank details for SASSA grants, especially since the process is different depending on which grant you're on. Thought I'd break it down because it's actually pretty important to get right.
If you're on the permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), you basically have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office—can't do it online. They'll give you a form to fill out, but here's the thing: you need to bring your ID, a recent bank statement (not older than 3 months) or a letter from your bank showing the account is active and in your name. SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that. Once you submit, it takes up to 21 working days for the bank to verify everything. Pro tip: if you want the change to kick in next month, you need to submit before the 15th. Miss that and you're waiting another cycle.
Now if you're on the SRD grant (the R370 relief one), that's actually easier because it's all online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a link via SMS, and you update your banking details from there. Still takes a few days to weeks for verification, but at least you don't have to leave your house.
For changing your phone number, similar deal—permanent grants need you to visit an office or call their helpline (0800 60 10 11), but SRD has an online portal where you can update it yourself. They send you an OTP to verify it's actually you.
One more thing: watch out for fake SASSA websites trying to get your info. Always use the official portal. Anyone else dealt with this recently? The wait times can be frustrating.
