Just figured out how to change my SASSA banking details after getting frustrated with the old process. Honestly, it depends on which grant you're on because the system is different for different types.

If you're on a permanent grant like old age or disability, you can't do this online unfortunately. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office and fill out the Payment Method Change Form (they call it the Consent Form for Bank Payment). Bring your original SA ID, a copy, and proof of your new bank account - they want a bank statement from the last three months or an official letter from the bank. One thing I learned: the account must be in your name only, no joint accounts or anything like that.

The processing takes up to 21 working days after they send it to the bank, so plan ahead. If you're trying to change it before the next month's payment, submit before the 15th of the current month or you'll miss that cycle.

Now if you're on the SRD R370 grant, it's actually way easier. You can change your banking details entirely online through the SASSA SRD portal. Just enter your ID number, they'll send you an SMS link, and you follow the prompts to add your new account details. Same rule applies though - the account has to be in your name.

For updating your phone number, permanent grant users should visit the office or call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11. SRD users can do it online through the contact portal using their ID and Application ID, and they'll send you an OTP to verify. Just make sure you're using the official SASSA website and not some random third-party site because there are definitely fake ones out there trying to scam people.

The whole thing is a bit tedious but once you know how to change your SASSA banking details, it's not as complicated as it seems. Just be patient with the timelines and keep your documents ready.
