Just got asked about updating SASSA banking details again, and honestly the process is pretty different depending on which grant you're on. Let me break down what I've learned because a lot of people get confused between the permanent grants and SRD.
If you're on a permanent grant like the old age, disability, or child support grant, you can't just do this online. I know, it's frustrating. You actually have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office. When you get there, ask for the Payment Method Change Form (sometimes they call it the Consent Form for Bank Payment). They'll need to see your original South African ID and a copy, plus proof of your new bank account. That proof needs to be something official like a bank statement from the last three months or a letter from your bank confirming the account is active and in your name. Important thing: SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or anything in someone else's name. Once they process it, the bank takes up to 21 working days to verify everything. If you want it to kick in next month, you need to submit before the 15th. Miss that and you're waiting another cycle.
Now, if you're on the SRD R370 grant, this is way simpler and you can actually update my SRD banking details online through their portal, which is honestly a game-changer. You go to the official SASSA SRD website, scroll to find the banking details section, and enter your 13-digit ID number. They send you a secure link via SMS, you click it, and then you put in your new bank details. Same rule applies though—has to be in your name exactly as it shows on your ID. The bank verification takes a few days to weeks, and your new account only gets used after they confirm it works.
For your phone number, it depends on your grant type too. With permanent grants, you need to visit the office or call the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 11. For SRD specifically, there's a dedicated contact portal where you enter your ID and application ID, put in your new number, and they send you a one-time PIN to verify. If you don't have your application ID, you can try retrieving it through the main SRD site using your old number.
One warning I'll add: there are definitely fake SASSA websites out there trying to scam people, especially around changing phone numbers. Always use the official links and never share your details on random sites. If the online portal gives you trouble, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 or visit your local SASSA office in person. It might mean waiting around, but it's way safer than dealing with sketchy websites. The whole point of these updates is to keep your payments secure and on time, so don't rush it if something feels off.
