Just realized a lot of people are confused about updating their SASSA grant details, especially when you need to change your bank account. Let me break down what actually works.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you can't do this online unfortunately. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office with your ID and proof of your new bank account. They'll give you a form to fill out, send it to the bank for verification, and it takes about 3 weeks to process. Make sure you submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect next payment cycle.
But if you're on the SRD grant, it's way easier. The whole thing is online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a link via SMS, and you update your banking details from there. Just remember the account has to be in your name only, no joint accounts or anything. Takes a few days to a week for the bank to verify.
For changing your phone number, same deal—permanent grants need an office visit or a call to 0800 60 10 11. SRD grants you can do online through their contact portal, and they'll send you an OTP to verify. The phone number thing is important because that's how they send you payment notifications and verification codes.
One more thing: watch out for fake websites trying to get your info. Always use the official SASSA portal. If you're stuck, just call them or visit the office. It's slower but at least you know it's legit.
