Just realized a lot of people are struggling with their SASSA grant updates, especially when it comes to changing bank details or phone numbers. Let me break down what actually works because the process is different depending on which grant you're on.
If you're getting the permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), you basically have to go in person to a SASSA office—there's no way around it. You'll need to fill out a Payment Method Change Form and bring your ID plus proof of your new bank account (a bank statement from the last three months works). The thing is, they can only pay into an account that's solely in your name, so no joint accounts or anything like that. Once you submit it, give it about 21 working days for the bank to verify everything. Pro tip: if you want the new details to work next month, you need to submit before the 15th of the current month.
Now, if you're on the SRD grant, it's actually way simpler because you can update your SRD banking details completely online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you just input your new bank info. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for verification, but at least you don't have to leave your house. Same rule though—the account has to be in your name.
For updating your phone number, permanent grant holders should just call the SASSA helpline (0800 60 10 11) or visit an office. But if you're on SRD, there's a dedicated contact portal where you enter your ID, new number, and they'll send you an OTP to verify. Just make sure you're using the official SASSA website because there are fake sites out there trying to scam people.
The whole thing takes time, but it's worth getting right so your payments don't get messed up. Anyone else had trouble with this process?
