Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA details, especially when payment dates are coming up. Let me break down what actually works because I've seen people make mistakes here.

So if you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you literally can't change your banking details online - you have to go to a SASSA office in person. Yeah, I know it's annoying. You need your valid ID, a bank statement not older than 3 months, or a letter from your bank confirming the account is active and in your name only. Fill out the Payment Method Change Form there, and they'll send it to the bank. Takes up to 21 working days to process. Important thing: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect the next month, otherwise you're waiting another cycle.

For cellphone number updates on permanent grants, you can try calling the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 11, but honestly visiting the office is more reliable if it's a complex change.

Now, if you're on the SRD R370 grant (the 350 status check thing), it's completely different - everything's online through their portal. Way easier. Go to the SASSA SRD website, enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS to your registered number, click it, and update your banking details. Takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify. Same rule though - account must be in your name, no third-party stuff.

For updating your cellphone on SRD, use their contact details portal - you'll need your ID and Application ID. Enter your new number, pick why you're changing it, they send an OTP to verify. Done.

Heads up though: there are fake websites out there trying to scam people with fake SASSA stuff. Always use the official portal links. If the online process isn't working, just call the helpline or visit your local office. Sometimes that's faster anyway.

The banking details update process can take a minute, so don't wait until the last second if you need to change something before the next payment date.
