Just found out a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA account details, especially when you need to change account number for R350 or other grants. Thought I'd share what actually works because the process is different depending on which grant you're getting.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you can't just do this online unfortunately. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office, fill out their Payment Method Change Form, and bring your ID plus proof of your new bank account. The bank statement can't be older than three months. They'll send everything to the bank for verification, which takes up to 21 days, so timing matters—submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to work for next month's payment.
Now, if you're getting the SRD R370 grant, that's actually way easier because it's all online through their portal. You just enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, and you can update your account number right there. Still takes a few days for the bank to verify though.
The phone number update process is similar—for SRD you can do it online through their contact portal with an OTP verification, but for permanent grants you might need to call 0800 60 10 11 or visit in person. One important thing: the account must be in your name only, no joint accounts or third-party stuff, otherwise SASSA won't process it.
Most people get tripped up on the documentation part or miss the deadline. If you're planning to change account number for R350 or any grant, better to get ahead of it before month-end.
