Just noticed the crypto spike today and it's actually pretty interesting what triggered it. Bitcoin's sitting around 68.7K right now with a solid 3% gain, and Ethereum popped above 2.1K. Everyone's wondering why the sudden move, and honestly it comes down to a few things hitting at once.
First, there was this massive liquidation cascade in the derivatives market. Traders who were shorting got absolutely rekt when Bitcoin started climbing. We're talking roughly 72 million in short positions getting wiped out in about 30 minutes. When that happens, exchanges have to buy the asset to close those trades, which just adds fuel to the rally. The whole liquidation event across leveraged markets hit nearly 246 million total. Ethereum jumped over 4% in the same window.
But the crypto spike wasn't just about forced buying. Oil prices absolutely tanked today, down over 7%, which eased inflation concerns. When people stop worrying about inflation, they're way more willing to take risks in assets like crypto. Meanwhile, traditional stocks got hammered - the Dow dropped over 700 points - but crypto went the opposite direction. That divergence is telling you something about where money's flowing.
There's also the macro backdrop. Trump made some comments about geopolitical tensions potentially easing, which calmed a lot of nerves. Less geopolitical risk usually means investors hunt for higher-growth opportunities. And on the institutional side, spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in about 53.87 million in fresh capital on Thursday alone. That's four straight days of inflows. When these funds get new money, they buy Bitcoin to back those shares, which supports the whole market.
Solana's interesting to watch right now - currently trading around 83.36 but still in that resistance zone. If it breaks above 88, could see another leg up. The crypto spike today shows how quickly sentiment can shift when liquidations, macro factors, and institutional flows all align. Open interest also jumped 5.2%, suggesting fresh money coming in rather than just position rolling.
