Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA banking details, especially with the grant payments coming up. Got confused about it myself last month, so thought I'd share what I learned.
So here's the thing—if you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you can't just do it online. You actually have to go to your nearest SASSA office in person. They'll give you a form to fill out, and you need to bring your ID, plus proof of your new bank account (a recent bank statement works). The whole verification thing takes up to 21 working days, which is why timing matters—you've gotta submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to kick in the next payment cycle.
Now, if you're on the SRD grant, that's different. Everything's online through their portal, which is way faster. You enter your ID number, they send you a link via SMS, and you update your banking details from there. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for the bank to verify it.
For checking your SASSA status and updating your phone number, both permanent and SRD grants have different processes. For permanent grants, you pretty much have to visit the office or call the helpline (0800 60 10 11). For SRD, there's an online contact portal where you can update your cellphone number—they'll send you an OTP to verify it's actually you.
One thing I'd warn you about: there are fake websites out there pretending to be SASSA. Always use the official portal. Also, remember that SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or accounts in someone else's name, so make sure whatever banking details you're updating are 100% in your name.
If you're having trouble with the online portal or the process in general, just call the helpline or visit an office. Sometimes it's slower, but it's more reliable than struggling with the system online.
