U.S. "Ford" aircraft carrier temporarily docks due to fire, nearly 200 sailors receive treatment
On March 17 local time, the American aircraft carrier USS “Ford” caught fire during participation in a military operation against Iran and is expected to dock temporarily for handling the incident. U.S. officials stated that the carrier is currently located in the Red Sea and plans to make a brief stop at Souda Bay on the Greek island of Crete; the specific duration of the stay has not been announced. It is understood that the fire broke out in the ship’s main laundry area, and after burning for several hours, the fire was brought under control. Approximately 200 sailors received treatment for smoke inhalation, and one person was transferred off the vessel. The fire also affected about 100 berths. The U.S. military previously stated that the fire did not impact the aircraft carrier’s propulsion systems, and the ship remains combat-ready. The “Ford” is one of the newest and largest aircraft carriers in the United States, with about 5,000 personnel and over 70 aircraft onboard; since February 28, when the U.S. and Israel launched military actions against Iran, it has participated in related operations.
