Recently, I’ve been experimenting with overseas account registration, and I found that virtual number platforms really save a lot of trouble. I’ve encountered many pitfalls before—some platforms are ridiculously slow, and some don’t receive verification codes at all. Only later did I figure out which ones are reliable.

Basically, virtual number platforms are services that rent temporary phone numbers to receive SMS messages, covering all over the world. You can pay per use or subscribe monthly. Among the ones I’ve tested, SMS-Activate and 5SIM offer the best overall experience—verification codes arrive within about 10 seconds, and they have full country coverage. For domestic users, Super Cloud SMS and XiaoNiao Receive Code are also good options. US numbers receive codes in 10-30 seconds, and Chinese numbers are even faster, around 5-20 seconds.

The main purpose of using these virtual number platforms is to protect privacy, avoid spam, or test SMS interfaces. The key is to choose reputable providers and not just go for the cheapest options. My advice is to keep several numbers on hand; if one becomes invalid, you can switch immediately. Many platforms also support one-click number switching, which is especially convenient.

One detail to note: shared numbers are more likely to trigger risk controls, and sometimes the target service will directly flag them as risky. If that happens, try switching to a number from a different country—this usually solves the problem. Also, these are meant for temporary use; don’t expect to use them as your main number long-term, as privacy and security cannot be guaranteed.

In any case, for scenarios that require temporary verification, virtual number platforms are definitely more cost-effective than buying new SIM cards.
