The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) recently stated that it is "closely monitoring" abnormal trading activity in the crude oil futures market. This statement comes after an unusual surge in trading volume in the crude oil market on March 23, prior to President Trump's remarks involving Iran, raising regulatory concerns.
Analysts point out that as the agency also oversees crypto futures, its enforcement actions could spill over into the digital asset space, leading to increased caution among leveraged market participants.
Meanwhile, the crypto market has delivered a bleak quarterly performance. Data from Coinglass shows that Bitcoin's return in Q1 2026 was -23.21%, marking the third-largest quarterly decline since 2013; Ethereum's first-quarter drop was 32.17%, also the third-lowest quarterly return since 2016.
Industry insiders believe that the current crypto market is caught in a tug-of-war between "macro regulatory tightening" and "bottoming out and rebounding." In April, U.S. crypto legislation will enter a critical window, with crude oil market volatility, CFTC regulatory developments, and various legislative agendas all becoming key variables influencing the short-term direction of the crypto space. #BTC #ETH
