I've been wondering lately how many people truly know who Nick Szabo is and what influence he had on the creation of Bitcoin. This guy is really an interesting figure in the world of cryptocurrencies, and his story is worth a closer look.

Nick Szabo is a computer scientist, lawyer, and cryptographer who introduced the term and concept of smart contracts. It was revolutionary— the idea that agreements could be encoded and automatically executed. Szabo graduated with a computer science degree from the University of Washington in 1989, then went further, earning a law degree from George Washington University. The combination of these two fields made him perfectly prepared to think about the future of digital finance.

In 1998, Nick Szabo created BitGold—a project many consider to be a direct predecessor to Bitcoin. It was never fully implemented, but the idea was there— a decentralized digital currency. Szabo explained that he wanted to solve the problems he saw in the traditional financial system.

Here’s where the interesting part begins. In 2014, Aston University conducted a linguistic analysis of Bitcoin’s white paper to find out who Satoshi Nakamoto really is. Researchers analyzed linguistic similarities and concluded that Nick Szabo could be the mysterious figure. Szabo quickly dismissed this, saying something like: “I’m afraid you misunderstood me as Satoshi, but I’ve gotten used to it.”

Interestingly, even Elon Musk weighed in on this topic. Musk said he believes that Nick Szabo— cryptographer, creator of BitGold, and the one who coined the term smart contracts— is the best candidate for Satoshi. Musk added that Szabo seems responsible for the evolution of these ideas more than anyone else. That was quite a significant endorsement.

But wait, there’s more. The first cryptocurrencies weren’t BitGold or Bitcoin. Before them, there was David Chaum’s ECash. BitGold was never actually offered as a currency, but transactions took place through ECash. The history of cryptocurrencies is deeper and more complex than most people think.

Nick Szabo remains one of the most important figures in the history of cryptocurrency, whether he is Satoshi or not. His contributions to the theory of smart contracts and the vision of decentralized finance have been fundamental. This is one of those cases where the real story is almost as fascinating as the speculation.
