Yesterday, on March 30, 2026, Iran did something that made the whole world sit up and take notice. Their Parliament's National Security Committee passed a bill officially imposing transit fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. But that’s not the worst part—the most alarming is their demand: all fees must be paid in Iran’s own currency—the Rial. Ships from the US, Israel, and those from countries that have sanctioned Iran alongside the US are all barred from passing.
Once the news broke, global oil prices surged. Brent crude futures immediately rose by 2.3%, firmly staying above $107 per barrel. The market panicked because everyone knows that the Strait of Hormuz is not an ordinary waterway; it’s the “throat” of global energy. About 20% of the world’s oil and 30% of liquefied natural gas pass through here daily. Exporting Persian Gulf oil is Iran’s only outlet. Now, Iran is setting up a “toll booth” here, effectively choking the global economy.
