just been reading about nft prices from a few years back and honestly some of these numbers are wild. pak's merge selling for 91.8 million back in 2021? that's insane. but here's the thing - it wasn't one person buying it. like 28k+ collectors pooled together to purchase different quantities. so technically the most expensive nft sold was actually a collective effort, which kind of changes how you think about it.
beeple's everydays started at only 100 bucks at christie's auction in 2021 but ended up going for 69 million. dude drew one piece every single day for 5000 days straight and compiled them all. that's dedication. then there's the clock - pak and julian assange collab that sold for 52.7 million. it literally tracks how many days assange has been locked up and updates daily. pretty heavy stuff for an nft.
the cryptopunks are everywhere on these most expensive nft sold lists. like seriously. #5822 went for 23 million, #7523 for 11.75 million. they're these pixelated alien avatars from 2017 and somehow they're worth more than most houses. #5822 is one of only 9 alien punks which explains the price tag i guess.
then you've got beeple again with human one - this 7-foot kinetic sculpture that's basically a living artwork. can update it remotely, changes based on time of day. sold for 29 million at christie's. and crossroad, his 10-second video about the 2020 election, went for 6.6 million.
what's crazy is how the most expensive nft sold prices have just kept climbing. ringers #109 by dmitri cherniak hit 6.93 million and it's literally generative art made of strings and nails. even the cheapest ringer in that series costs like 88k now.
people are still asking if nfts are actually profitable. honestly depends on what you buy and when. the market's brutal - 95% of nfts apparently have basically no value. but if you somehow grabbed an early cryptopunk or a beeple? yeah those turned out to be absolute goldmines. most expensive nft sold records keep getting broken but it's not like everyone's getting rich off this stuff. it's pretty much collectors and artists at the top tier making the real money.
