I just realized an interesting thing about how token unlocks affect the prices of crypto projects. Today, I want to share some experiences I’ve learned from tracking these token unlock events.
Simply put, a token unlock is the process of releasing previously locked tokens into circulation. These tokens may belong to the development team, VC investors, advisors, or even community rewards. The reason projects lock tokens from the start is quite reasonable—to prevent "whales" from dumping and causing price crashes in the early days.
But what’s the interesting part? When a large amount of tokens are unlocked at once, it can create enormous selling pressure. I’ve observed this happening repeatedly—fear of a dump prompts early investors to exit their positions. If the unlocked tokens make up a high percentage of the circulating supply, the impact can be even stronger.
Looking at the recent case of TRUMP coin, the current price hovers around $3.02 with fairly active trading volume. In the past, during major unlock events, the price also faced downward pressure but then recovered strongly thanks to positive news. This shows that not all token unlocks lead to price declines.
Another case is APT. I’ve noticed that after three unlocks, the price of APT ( is currently $0.91, down 3.25% in 24h ). Usually, the price tends to rise before the unlock, then drops afterward. This pattern repeats quite consistently until the overall market (Bitcoin) experiences significant movements, which then influence APT as well.
So, how can you avoid surprises? I recommend using reputable tools like Tokenomist or DeFiLlama to track token unlock schedules. These platforms provide detailed information: amount, percentage, recipient, and specific timeline. Also, follow official channels of the project on X, Discord, or Medium, as they often announce unlocks in advance.
But here’s the most important part—don’t assume every token unlock is a bearish signal. Instead, analyze more deeply: who will receive the tokens? Do they have an incentive to sell? Are there any accompanying news? Combine technical analysis with market news to make smarter decisions.
Token unlocks can be both an opportunity and a risk, depending on how you approach them. Smart traders use this information along with analytical tools to trade more effectively. Wishing you success in monitoring and leveraging opportunities from token unlock events.
