Just went down the rabbit hole on Pakistan's currency history and it's actually wild how much the rupee has depreciated over the decades. The USD to PKR history tells quite a story.
So back in 1947 when Pakistan gained independence, 1 dollar was worth just 3.31 rupees. Stayed stable at that rate for years, right through the 1950s. Then in 1955 it started shifting to 3.91, and by the late 50s it settled around 4.76. Pretty stable period overall.
But here's where it gets interesting. By the early 1970s, the rupee took a hit and jumped to 11 rupees per dollar. Then it kept climbing through the 80s and 90s. I'm looking at 1989 and it's already at 20.54, then 1999 hits 51.90. That's a massive move in just a decade.
The 2000s saw continued pressure. By 2008, it crossed 81, and things really accelerated after that. The USD to PKR rate just kept climbing - 2013 was 107, 2018 hit 139, and by 2019 we're at 163. Then 2022 and 2023 saw some of the steepest drops with rates hitting 240 and 286 respectively.
Currently sitting around 277 in 2024. When you look at this full USD to PKR history from 1947 to now, you're basically watching 75+ years of currency depreciation. The rupee lost like 99% of its value against the dollar. Wild to think about what that means for savings and purchasing power over generations.
