A common question that often confuses newcomers to blockchain is: what is mainnet, testnet, and devnet? Today, I’ll try to explain these three concepts.
Simply put, mainnet is where the real game is played. That is, the protocol is fully ready, live, and everything is real. You need to pay real fees for transactions here. When asked what is mainnet, we answer: it’s a system where real money circulates in real life. A mistake or bug here can have serious consequences, so thorough testing before switching to mainnet is essential.
Testnet is the behind-the-scenes, rehearsal stage. DApps and blockchain networks test themselves here before going live on mainnet. Think of it like actors rehearsing before a show. The best part of testnet is that it costs nothing. The tokens used are test tokens without real value. In fact, many testnets reward users who find bugs and report them to the team.
Devnet is an environment at the developer level. It’s where programmers work in their own sandboxes. While testnets are usually limited in time, devnets are more long-term and continuously used by developers. Usually, after devnet, projects move to testnet, then to mainnet.
In short: devnet is for developers, testnet is an open rehearsal for everyone, and mainnet is the real world. Understanding these steps in the blockchain world is important to see how projects mature.
