I just found out that it has been exactly 17 years since Hal Finney posted the now-legendary tweet in the crypto community. On January 11, 2009, Hal Finney simply wrote "Running Bitcoin" on Twitter, but that tweet literally changed history. The next day, Satoshi Nakamoto sent him 10 BTC. So Hal Finney became the first person to receive a Bitcoin transaction. Crazy, right? From just a white paper, it turned into a financial revolution because there were people like Hal Finney who dared to try first.
Even more interesting, there’s a really weird coincidence. Exactly 15 years later, on the same date—(January 11, 2024)—the SEC finally approved the first physically-backed Bitcoin ETF. So, on the same day as Hal Finney’s historic tweet, the mainstream financial world officially acknowledged Bitcoin. It’s like there’s some supernatural timing at play.
That’s why Hal Finney is an underrated figure in Bitcoin history. People often focus on Satoshi, but without Hal Finney being an early adopter and actually testing Bitcoin, we might just have a white paper that nobody cares about. He literally proved that this system really works. Huge respect for his contribution to this ecosystem.
