The Hong Kong Education Professionals Association initiated the dissolution process in September 2021. The Labour Department’s Registry of Trade Unions published a notice stating that, in accordance with Section 66(e) of the Trade Unions Ordinance, the Association was dissolved this Tuesday (24th).

Founded 48 years ago, the Association was once the largest union in the education sector, with approximately 95,000 members, and was the largest single-industry union in Hong Kong.

Xinhua News Agency and the People’s Daily criticized the Association in 2021 for deviating from education and colluding with the Alliance for True Democracy and the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, calling it a tumor that must be eradicated. The Education Bureau also stated that the Association had allowed politics to infiltrate schools, essentially making it no different from a political organization, and announced the termination of its working relationship with the Association.

In August of the same year, the Association announced its dissolution. The then-president, Fung Wai Wah, expressed regret over the changes in the social and political environment in recent years. He noted that, despite the Council’s best efforts to find ways to continue operations amidst recent drastic developments, they had not seen a viable prospect. After considerable effort to resolve the crisis, the Council, with support from the supervisors, unanimously decided to dissolve and initiate the relevant procedures.
