According to the Russian side on the 26th, Vyacheslav Nikonov, head of the Russian delegation and First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, stated that Russian and American lawmakers held their first meeting in Washington in recent years. “The current situation is better than I expected.”

Nikonov said that restoring parliamentary contacts is possible, and the Russian delegation will continue to advance work as planned.

On the same day, Kremlin spokesperson Peskov confirmed that Russian lawmakers had received instructions from President Putin before visiting the U.S. and would report the results of the talks to the president.

It is reported that parliamentary contacts between Russia and the U.S. were interrupted in 2014 after Western sanctions were imposed on Russia. Both sides have attempted to resume dialogue multiple times but have been unsuccessful.
