Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that Iran has begun charging tolls to some commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, further demonstrating Tehran’s control over this vital global maritime energy corridor.

Sources said the fees are being collected on a case-by-case basis, with a maximum of $2 million per voyage, effectively establishing an informal “toll” on the waterway. Some ships have already paid the fees, but the specific payment mechanisms are unclear, including which currency is used, and this practice does not appear to be a systematic arrangement.

India stated that international law guarantees the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, and no party has the right to impose charges for using this route.
