Deep Tide TechFlow News: On March 24, according to reports from Xinbao, a 39-year-old Hong Kong woman met a man claiming to be an employee of a new energy company through a mobile dating app, and subsequently moved to WhatsApp where they developed an online romantic relationship. The other party lured the victim to invest in cryptocurrency on a fraudulent trading platform by promising high returns. Following the platform customer service's instructions, the victim cumulatively transferred over 5.55 million Hong Kong dollars to multiple unknown personal FastPay accounts within approximately two months. The scammers subsequently went missing, and the victim discovered the fraud.
Hong Kong police received 15 online romance scam cases last week, involving fraudulent amounts close to 10 million Hong Kong dollars. Police remind the public that such scams commonly use investments in precious metals and cryptocurrencies as bait.
