Did the Baba Ijesha case reveal the truth, or raise even more questions?
Nigeria's froze the day the news broke. Olanrewaju Omiyinka a familiar Nollywood face, was suddenly at the center of a shocking accusation that ignited outrage nationwide. The Baba Ijesha sêx assæult case quickly became more than a scandal. it became a moment of truth about power, justice, and the voices we chose to hear.
In April 2021, nollywood actor Baba Ijesha was arrested in Lagos over allegations involving a minor. The case quickly went viral after CCTV footage surfaced, sparking outrage across Nigeria, Putting spotlight on child protection issues.
He was charged by the Lagos state Government for sexual assault and indecent treatment of a child. A trial that lasted over a year, with witnesses, legal arguments and video evidence presented in court.
Iyabo Ojo, Princess, Toke Makinwa amongst others, were some of the most vocal voices on social media. She openly candemed the alleged child abuse and called on industry colleagues to join her.
In July 2022, the court delivered its judgment. Baba Ijesha was found guilty of sêxual assæult and indecent treatment of a minor. However he wasn't convicted on charges related to sêxual penetration or attempted penetration.
Baba Ijesha was eventually sentenced to multiple prison terms, meant to run concurrently, Meaning he served about 5 years in total, not 16 as some reports initially suggested.
Last year 2025, he was released after completing his sentence. He was not cleared or exonerated. The Case remains one of Nigeria's most talked about celebrity legal battles. He maintains however, that he is innocent. Was he just another victim of false accusations or did justice prevail?
