Investors will be able to trade high-volume securities the same way they do traditional shares, or as blockchain-based digital tokens through the Depository Trust Company.

Nasdaq filed the proposal to the SEC in September.

The only securities that will be permitted to be traded in tokenised form currently are stocks in the Russell 1000 Index, and exchange-traded funds tracking benchmarks such as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100.

Earlier this month, Nasdaq connected its European trading venues to Seturion tokenised asset platform.
