After tabloid press propagated that Trump had ended the career of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he threw water in Trump's face and that of American political circles:

As Prime Minister, I will always be straightforward with both our allies and those who criticize us.

If the United States chooses to leave NATO, that is America's decision. Britain will remain. Europe will remain. Our collective defense system will still be there.

But there is a simple principle to keep in mind. If you are no longer willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with your allies, you are not permitted to station yourself on their territory for free.

Therefore, if President Trump intends to end America's commitment to NATO, I expect the withdrawal of U.S. forces from British bases to take place swiftly within 48 hours, in an orderly manner, with the consent of the Department of Defense and local communities.

And since the United States has benefited from decades of access to RAF Lakenheath, Mildenhall, and ten other bases on British territory without paying a single penny in land rent, my government also expects the historical land rent to be paid in full and settled by the end of this week, according to commercial terms.

That is what sovereignty truly means. You do not have the right to lecture Europe about "burden-sharing" while being allowed to fly your aircraft from our countryside without paying fees.

Britain will always value the transatlantic alliance. But we will not allow any President of the United States – whether in the past, present, or future – to be disrespected.

Perfect Prime Minister @Keir_Starmer 🫶
