Miami Today: Changes in Migration Policy, Climate Alerts and International Investigations
Miami and the state of Florida face a week full of developments ranging from high-impact political decisions to environmental and operational challenges that keep local and federal authorities on alert.
Tightening Immigration Agenda: Donalds’ Plan
Congressman Byron Donalds, who is seeking to position himself in the Republican primaries for governor, reaffirmed his comprehensive strategy against undocumented immigration. His proposal is structured around three main pillars: imprisoning criminals, deporting migrants without legal status, and strengthening law enforcement mechanisms.
Donalds highlighted the support of 36 sheriffs across different jurisdictions in the state, representing more than half of such authorities in Florida. This institutional backing aims to demonstrate the feasibility and acceptance of his measures among local officials responsible for public safety.
Critical Fire Situation: St. Lucie Declares State of Alert
St. Lucie County activated emergency measures due to extreme drought affecting the region and the consequent risk of wildfires. Under this critical situation, authorities issued a complete burn ban, allowing the county administration to acquire equipment and resources immediately without following usual administrative procedures.
The red flag warning extended to several counties in southern Florida, alerting about low relative humidity and strong winds that facilitate rapid fire spread. Fire crews remain on constant vigilance throughout the region.
Weather Forecast: Variability by Region
For the coming days in Miami and southern Florida, expect windy conditions in the morning followed by sunny periods in the afternoon. High temperatures will hover around 80°F (27°C), with lows near 69°F (21°C). However, nighttime showers are forecasted, which could intensify.
In central and northern Florida, the trend will be similar but with slightly lower temperatures. In cities like Tampa and Tallahassee, showers could turn into significant thunderstorms, requiring residents and travelers to take extra precautions.
International Investigation: Big Pine Key Boat
The vessel involved in an armed confrontation off the Cuban coast, which resulted in four deaths reported by the Cuban government, has been identified as a stolen fishing boat from Big Pine Key, in the Florida Keys. According to local media reports, the original owner identified Héctor Duardy Cruz Correa, who was performing maintenance work on the property, as the main suspect in the theft.
Local and federal authorities are working together on the investigation. Cruz Correa’s whereabouts remain unknown despite his family ties on the island. High-level officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Attorney General James Uthmeier, have expressed distrust of Cuban reports and pushed for independent investigations to clarify the facts.
Congressman Carlos Giménez, of Cuban origin, publicly questioned the information provided by Cuban authorities, asserting that “the brutal regime spreads disinformation and lies.” He has urged Washington to establish an independent investigative mission to accurately determine what happened.
Insurance Sector Reimbursements: Economic Relief Measures
State Farm announced a dividend that averages a savings of US$173 per vehicle for its auto insurance customers. This measure is part of a series of regulatory adjustments designed to stabilize the insurance market in Florida.
Similarly, other insurers like Progressive, USAA, and AAA implemented refunds or rate reductions for similar reasons. These adjustments aim to ease the financial burden on Floridian drivers following recent changes in state insurance regulations.
Public Safety: Operations Against Organized Crime
Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the arrest of Keith Wallis, accused of executing a systematic plan of thefts at Target stores between Orlando and Miami. Wallis stole high-value collectible card boxes, paying only for low-cost condiment packets at self-checkout.
According to court records, Wallis generated nearly US$40,000 in income through selling stolen items on eBay. If convicted on all charges, he faces a potential sentence of up to 90 years in prison.
In Tallahassee, police have handed over 26 detainees to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during 2026, under federal agreements allowing local police to enforce immigration laws. Most detainees faced various charges, though some had no apparent criminal accusations. The county used state funds to cover detention and transfer costs.
TSA Crisis: Tensions Due to Federal Shutdown
The Transportation Security Administration implemented emergency measures due to the partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security. Among these measures is the suspension of courtesy escorts for lawmakers, prioritizing the security of U.S. airspace.
Congressman Carlos Giménez publicly expressed his discontent, noting that federal employees are facing financial difficulties working without regular pay. He described the situation as “political theater” where those ensuring public safety are paying the price of legislative negotiations.
Technological Expansion: Waymo Arrives in Orlando
Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous vehicle division, announced the expansion of its driverless transportation service to Orlando. This marks the company’s first simultaneous launch in multiple new markets, including three cities in Texas.
The service will operate gradually by invitation through its mobile app. With this addition, Waymo’s autonomous transportation network reaches a total of ten cities in the United States, strengthening its presence across different markets.
University Security: Guardian Program Expansion Proposal
Florida lawmakers propose expanding the Guardian program to allow university staff to carry weapons on campuses. This initiative responds to the shooting in April 2025 at a state educational institution and aims to prevent similar acts of violence.
The regulation requires participants to complete 144 hours of specialized technical training. However, local media reports indicate some professors and unions are concerned that more weapons could complicate law enforcement response during emergencies.
Administrative Services: Special Passport Fair in Miami
The State Department will hold a special passport application event at the Westchester Regional Library. The event is designed for U.S. citizens applying for their first passport or for minors, using Form DS-11.
The fair will operate without prior appointment, allowing applicants to expedite a process that normally requires advance scheduling. Attendees must present original proof of citizenship, photo ID, and pay the applicable fees. These special events aim to facilitate access to federal services in the Miami area.
Fiscal Measures in Hialeah: Relief for Seniors
Hialeah approved a tax relief program that would send reimbursements to property owners over 65 with low income. The initiative would benefit approximately 2,225 households, using US$1.2 million from the municipal general fund.
Mayor Bryan Calvo defends the legality of the measure, though legal experts warn of potential legal challenges related to using public funds to benefit a specific group of residents. The measure received first reading approval from the council, with final vote scheduled for March.
At the same time, Calvo expressed concern over recent violence near Cuban waters, announcing that the city will monitor possible links to Hialeah and support thorough investigations of the events.
