Investigations have found that some physical height-increasing clinics not only target teenagers with consumer fraud but also claim to help adults whose growth plates have already closed. At the Deji Rui direct store, staff told reporters that they can also help adults increase height. The head of Deji Rui’s Youth Physical Height Growth Headquarters admitted, “Adults are just straightening their bones, not making new bones grow. Opening the growth plates after they’ve closed— that’s impossible. It’s all a scam.” Although industry insiders know that once the growth plates close, natural height increase is no longer possible, another center, Yingruike Height and Physical Conditioning Center, claims it can achieve “closure height increase” that defies scientific knowledge. The Yingruike representative told reporters that they can incorporate physiological adjustments, psychological interventions, and even metaphysical methods— as long as parents are willing to pay, they can include these in height-increasing packages. “Closure height increase is a combined approach. I also offer psychological therapy and quantum repair.” When asked about the scientific basis and medical support for these height-increasing methods, the representative said he has no medical data or clinical validation reports and just wants to make money. “It’s just a physical height-increasing scam. Whether it has scientific backing or not, we still make money—this is a highly profitable industry.”

Targeting different groups with ever-changing tricks, these businesses are well aware of their tactics—exploiting people’s height anxiety to set up consumer scams. By the end of the investigation, such height-increasing clinics continue to expand and open new branches. Take Deji Rui as an example: there are now over seventy stores across more than ten provinces. Anlishen has over sixty stores, and Yingruike has more than thirty franchise locations. Relying on sales pitches that falsely boast “cutting-edge technology” and “patented techniques,” these height-myth merchants are deceiving consumers and reaping huge profits in the market.
