President Trump posted on social media on the 17th that most NATO “allies” have notified the United States that they are unwilling to participate in military actions by the U.S. and Israel against Iran. The U.S. no longer “needs” help from NATO countries and others.

Trump said he was “not surprised” by these countries’ actions and described NATO as essentially a “one-way street,” stating, “We will protect them, but they won’t do anything for us, especially when we need them.”

Trump said the U.S. has “no longer needs or expects” help from NATO countries. The same applies to Japan, Australia, and South Korea. “We don’t need anyone’s help at all.”

On the 15th, Trump stated that the U.S. is discussing with other countries to jointly ensure the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that if NATO allies do not take action to help the U.S. keep the Strait open, NATO will face a “very bad future.” The next day, he complained that some allies are “not enthusiastic” about assisting the U.S., implying that these allies, once protected by the U.S., are “ungrateful.”

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell directly stated on the 16th that the conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran “is not Europe’s war.” “No one wants to get involved in this war voluntarily,” and EU member states have no intention of expanding their current escort missions in the Red Sea and Gulf region to include the Strait of Hormuz.
